We wrapped up winter quarter at GameCamp! with a ROM hacking workshop hosted by Patrick LeMieux, which instructed student in the basics of Nintendo cartridge anatomy, soldering, and viewing and editing ROM files. Each of the participant groups did their own manipulations of Super Mario Bros., from sprite edits that turned Mario’s hat backward to hacks that changed his movements and the passage of time.
Josef Nguyen has posted a full recap of the event with images and links to useful software over at the GameCamp! website. If you haven’t explored it yet, the rest of the site is full of open source game design activities and presentations for use in a classroom or workshop setting.
